Keen started in 1999 with the invention of the iconic Newport Sandal by Martin Keen in Jamestown, Rhode Island. What began as an innovative sandal with a protective black toe bumper for water sports enthusiasts quickly grew into a versatile brand focused on outdoor lovers. Since the first Keen sandals and shoes were produced in 2003, the brand has expanded its range to include casual and cold-weather footwear, work boots, and accessories—all designed with comfort, durability, and functionality in mind.

Keen stands not only for quality but also for social responsibility and sustainability. After the 2004 tsunami in Asia, Keen donated its entire $1 million advertising budget to disaster relief and launched the Hybrid.Care program. Through this initiative, the brand partners with organizations like The Conservation Alliance and Leave No Trace to support environmental conservation and social projects. Additionally, since 2010, Keen has been manufacturing part of its collection in the United States at its own factory in Portland, Oregon, where its headquarters are also located.
